New View EDU #49

In early August I had a blast as a co-guest with Stacey Roshan on the New View Edu podcast, hosted by the incredible Tim Fish, Chief Innovation Officer at NAIS. Tim is a highly gifted interviewer and I am so honored he included me. Our episode was published November, 14, 2023

BTW, my favorite of all these episodes is #40: Student Voice and Agency in Education.

Thank you ATLIS!

The Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS), the only professional association for independent school technology directors, recently recognized me as one of the 2023 ATLIS Pillar Award winners. It was an honor to join the other highly deserving recipients this year in Grand Rapids: Peter Antupit, Chief Information Officer, Crystal Springs Uplands School; Susan Davis, retired educator and professional development director at ATLIS; and Larry Kahn, retired technology director. Read about the ATLIS Pillar Awards.

New Adventure: San Francisco University High School

In July, 2023 I began a new adventure as Director of Technology at San Francisco University High School (UHS). Although I will miss the warm and embracing  K-12 community at Convent & Stuart Hall, moving to UHS is a "coming home" of sorts – back to a high school so similar to the roots of my ed-tech career that began at The Urban School in 1999. I am thrilled to be closing out my career at such a preeminent and progressive school that "challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self."

Convent & Stuart Hall

In 2011, I transitioned into the newly defined role as Director of Educational Innovation and Information Services, leading tech-related strategic initiatives at Convent & Stuart Hall Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco. C&SH is a complex K-12, multi-campus independent school in the heart of San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood.

Much of my work involved leading the Tech & Innovation Team of 8+ educators and technicians supporting 1150 students and over 200 employees. All students K-12 were issued school-owned Apple iPads. The Dual Device program supported the addition of home-owned laptops for all in Grades 7-12. Nearly all faculty and staff also used multiple devices.

In addition to educational technology leadership, I helped lead rethinking and renovating learning spaces, working with leading architects and designers to transform classrooms, libraries, and other spaces into learning studios that support and extend collaboration for all.

The Urban School

I served as Director of Technology at the Urban School of San Francisco from 1999-2011. At Urban I led one of the first 1:1 Apple laptop programs in California, co-led the award-winning oral history program, Telling Their Stories, and presented at dozens of workshops around the country related to these initiatives. Urban was a school on the cutting edge of curriculum innovation that spans far beyond technology.

Refer to the articles and presentations about Urban's tech and oral history initiatives in Writings and Presentations.
